Talent ? Skill ? Instinct?
In the middle of one of my many philosphical debates with Muqeem, i find myself curious about the definition of talent and skill and instinct ( all used with respect to an individual artist ) and i find myself defining them as below-
An instinct would be a powerful impulse that feels natural rather than reasoned eg; survival and reproduction.
Artistic Talent would be the natural instinct to solve visual problems.
Artistic skill would then be a cultivated instinct to solve visual problems. It would usually be cultivated and gained through experience and training.
I almost make 'talent' sound more pure and natural and skill sound equally harnessed and artificial , dont i ?
Having said that, appreciation of any artform and its artist is purely subjective and hence would be adjectives i.e; talent and skill
I guess my dillemma really is - now that talent and skill sound so different from one another, is it not possible to blur the lines and see it as one ? If i went back to my earlier definition of instinct, i find myself standing at a point where i am comfortable seeing them as one. Humans have known to be trained to alter their natural instincts (probably not the best example at the moment considering its topical nature would be kamikazi aka 'suicide bombers' who have been trained to fight the most natural impulse of staying alive)
I guess the point that i am trying to vaguely make really is that talent can be developed over time as a skill. The hard part though is to be able to see the bigger picture and be able to move consistently towards becoming talented and not getting seduced by the temptations that developing skill has to offer i.e; job security.
At this point, i think if i go on ... i might just get redundant... so wil stop until i can shed some more light on the matter with another blog entry.
